College of Charleston - CharlestonThe College of Charleston and the University of Charleston share one of the nation's most beautiful and historic campuses. Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is the oldest institution of higher education in South Carolina. In 1836 it became the nation's first municipal college and in 1970 was incorpoated in the South Carolina higher education system. In 1992, the University of Charleston, S.C. was established for graduate studies, professional development and community services, and faculty research and grant administration. Medical University of South Carolina - CharlestonThe Medical Society of South Carolina founded the College of Medicine in 1824. This was the South's first medical school. In 1913, the medical college became a state-owned institution. By 1969, the institution had grown to include a variety of professional and graduate programs and had added four more schools including Nursing , Graduate Studies, Health Related Professions and Dental Medicine.
