South Carolina, University of, at Columbia

Chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College, the University of South Carolina was the first institution of higher learning funded entirely by a state.

With the voluntary enlistment of all students into the Army of the Confederacy, the College was forced to close in June of 1862. It re-opened in 1865, went through a number of reorganizations and even a period of closure but, finally in 1906, it was rechartered as the University of South Carolina. It has a total enrolment of over 24,000 students nearly half of which are graduate students.
