Clemson area FacilitiesNote: telephone area code is 864Clemson University - ClemsonIn the post-Civil War days of 1865, Thomas Clemson, the University's founder, looked upon a South that lay in economic ruin, remarking: "Everyone is ruined, and those that can are leaving." At his death in 1888, his Fort Hill plantation and a considerable sum from his personal assets was willed to be used to establish a college that would teach scientific agriculture and the mechanical arts to the youth of South Carolina. This became the Clemson Agricultural College. Originally an all-male military school, it was changed to "civilian" status in 1955and is now a coeducational institution. Southern Wesleyan University - CentralFounded in 1906 at its present location in the town of Central, five miles north of Clemson, South Carolina,.Southern Wesleyan University is a four-year, liberal arts institution dedicated to the concept that, "God is the source of all truth and wisdom."
