Here are some items of information you may find
useful:
How to get help:
Cell Phones - for NC State Highway Patrol, dial *HP
also . . . 911 is now in effect throughout most of state.
Road
Construction and Closure:
We are trying to persuade NC Dept of
Transportation to set up a website (similar to South Carolina's) so you can check for area
of road construction and closures. For the time being, "release of this information
is not authorized."
The NCDOT is very busy currently placing guard
rails in the freeway medians furthering their efforts to prevent vehicles from crossing
the medians and striking vehicles going the other direction. Work Zone signs are
posted in these construction areas. Watch your speed; there is an additional penalty of up
to $250 for speeding in these work zones.
It's the Law!:
Vehicles must use headlights during inclement
weather or other conditions of restricted visibility. A 'rule of thumb' - when your wipers
are on, your headlights must be on.
The driver and front seat passenger(s) must wear
seat belts when the vehicle is in motion.
Child restraint systems must be in use when
transporting children under 6 years of age. Children under 3 years of age must be secured
in a restraint seating device when seated anywhere.
Welcome Centers:
Get up-to-date tour information and the latest
weather reports. All tour centers are open from 8a to 5p. Restrooms are open around
the clock and are continually maintained. Security is also provided around the clock to
help assure your safety.
