Tryon Palace and Gardens -
Completed in 1770 as the official governor's mansion and statehouse, the building contained the assembly hall, council chambers and various public offices in addition to the residence of the Royal Governor, William Tryon. On the shore of the Trent River, this mini-estate has some lovely, world renown, 18th Century English gardens which are also open to the public. Now a State of North Carolina historic site, there is a web site devoted to the gardens. (see also Tryon Palace in Historic Sites.)
