Carolina has a history of being a popular spot for visitors. It was considered a paradise by many groups of Native Americans. Shortly after that famous voyage of Columbus, both the French and the Spaniards were becoming regular visitors. One of the earliest known post-Viking settlements in North America was around 1526 at Winyah Bay (near Georgetown). It wasn't until a half century later that the English established their first colony (at Roanoke Island).

Carolina was a land grant by King Charles (the First) to Robert Heath, one of his court favorites. It is said that King George (the First) liked Carolina so much that he bought it back in 1721 and then, nine years later, split it into two colonies (thus we now have North Carolina and South Carolina)

Our War of Independence (Revolutionary War) really started in the 1760s in South Carolina (do we hear some arguments?) The real fighting, of course, started in Massachusetts but some of the most significant battles of that war were fought in Carolina. Of course there were other wars before and after the War of Independence. There was a second War of Independence (better known as the Civil War or the War Between the States) but the Carolinas 'lost' that one.

So, now you are an expert on Carolina history. Expert enough to enjoy some of the most fascinating historical sites in the United States of America. Though many of these sites were battlegrounds, some of the most interesting are the old homes and churches that contributed so greatly to the causes in their times.

In this section you can review many of Carolina's historic sites. To help you find those more appealing to your personal preference and knowledge we have listed them in four categories:
