Site of the 1775 Provincial Congress, the area was occupied alternately by the Colonial and British armies during the Revolutionary War. Here, built just prior to the commencement of the Revolutionary War, is an excellent example of an early Quaker-plan house. General Wade Hampton's army was encamped in the area around the house in the last days of the War Between the States. The house has since been known as the "Last Headquarters of the Confederacy". From here General Johnston went to Bennett Place to negotiate a surrender with General Sherman. Now completely restored, the house is the visitors' center for Orange County. Located at 150 E King in Hillsborough NC. (I-40 exit #153) Phone: 919-732-7741; Fax: 919-732-6322
