Charleston area FacilitiesNote: telephone area code is 843Charles Pinckney National Historic Site - Charleston SCEstablished to interpret the role of Charles Pinckney in the development of the Constitution of the United States of America. Located 6 miles north of Charleston on US-17 (turn left on Long Point Rd, then 1/2 mile to entrance on left) or off I-526 (take Long Point Rd exit, left at traffic light then 3 miles to entrance on right).
Return to Charleston - Return to area MAP - Return to area Community LIST Charles Towne Landing - Charlestown SC Virtual reality in the 17th Century. Experience what life was like in the very first English settlement in South Carolina (1670). Charles Towne features a full-size model of the kind of sailing ship that crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the 17th century, bring colonists to the New World and supplying them with the things they couldn't make here. The park also includes several gardens and a zoo. The Site has a self-guided walking/biking tour (bikes available for rent). Charles Towne Landing is located at 1500 Old Towne Road (west of the Ashley River on SC 171) about 3 miles from downtown Charlestown. Park Hours: 8:30a. - 5p. Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Return to Charleston - Return to area MAP - Return to area Community LIST Fort Moultrie National Monument - Charleston SCA stalwart in early American coastal defenses, Ft Moultrie is the site of the first decisive victory in the American Revolution. It was significant in the War Between the States as a launching site for cannonballs into Ft Sumter. Reconstructed three times, it is a great exhiubit of how coastal defenses have evolved. From Charleston on US-17, right opnto SC-703, right again at Sullivans Island and right again on Middle Street. Continue 1.5 miles to the fort. Open 9a-6p daily Memorial Day to Labor Day. Closes at 5p remainder of the year. Allow at least 1½ hours, more probably 2, for the self-guided tour. FREE. For more information phone 843-883-3123.
Fort Sumter National Monument - CharlestonMost famous for its role in the War Between the States, Fort Sumter is the site of the first engagement of that war April 12th and 13th, 1861. After 34 hours of intense fighting the Union forces surrenered to the Confederates who then withstood a 22 month siege. It was a black 22 months for the Confederate forces under constant bombardment from the Union forces (see Fort Moultrie) and Fort Sumter's brick fortifications were literally reduced to rubble. Only access is via concessionaire tour boats which depart from Patriots Point in Mt Pleasant and also the City Marina on Lockwood Blvd (just south of US-17 in Charleston). Tours are conducted by National Park Service personnel. Tours depart from the Marina at 9:30a, noon and 2:30p and from the Patriots Point landing at 10:45a, 1:30p and 4p daily from April 1 through Labor Day weekend. Allow at least 2½ hours for the tour. While the Fort admission is free, the fare for the boat ride to and from the fort is $10. For more information phone 843-883-3123.
