Cape Hatteras Lighthouse - Buxton, Hatteras Is.

Though a part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore (described in the Parks section), the Lighthouse is definitely historical. Built in 1870 to warn passing ships of the treacherous Diamond Shoals , it is still the tallest brick structure of this type in the United States. Normally, an accessible balcony at the lamp afforts a great view of the Banks. Currently, however, the entire structure is being moved across the sand, inch by inch, to a new, safer location away from the constant threat of the surf. There is also a self-guiding nature trail nearby (you'd be surprised what that nature trail can show you). Phone: 919-987-2394.
