Throughout history, road intersections with a lot of commercial traffic breed prosperous towns and cities. And so was the case with Dorchester, founded in 1697 by a group representing the Congregational Church of Dorchester, Massachusetts. During the Revolution, however, the town was subjected to severe British retributions. A combination of circumstances, both natural and shifting of trade routes, allowed the quick growth of Summerville at the expense of Dorchester. Now we have a 325-acre park with an Interpretive Kiosk and exhibits on the history of Dorchester and area communities and life on upper Ashley River. Other attractions include the site of the tabby fort (built in the mid 18th century), archaeological excavations of the town site and the tower of St. George's Parish Church .
