Moores Creek National Battlefield - Wilmington NCHere was won a very decisive battle in the early years of the Revolutionary War. The challenge was to prevent the Loyalist (to the Crown) from taking control of North Carolina (which would allow the British to easily overcome the southern colonies). February 12th, 1776 the battle was fought and won. Other battles, mostly centered around Lord Cornwallis, were fought in the Piedmont, were fought as the British sought to gain control through the back door but failed there, too.
Return to Wilmington - Return to area MAP - Return to area Community LIST USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial One of our great and glorious ships of World War II, the USS North Carolina is now permanently moored across the Cape Fear River from Wilmington. Open daily, you can tour all eight decks. There is no way one can adequately describe experiencing the inside of this ship and imagining what the crews had to endure during those fierce naval battles. But this is an experience that should not be missed.
