Old Salem began as a Moravian settlement in 1753 with the acquisition of 100,000 acres from Lord Granville, one of the lord proprietors of North Carolina. The tract was named Wachovia in honor of Count von Zinzendorf who owned an estate in Austria of the same name. Today, Old Salem is one of the best preserved show places of early American life style. Although Moravian in all aspects, much can be learned about life in 19th Century America. Costumed interpreters re-create late-18th- and early 19th-century life in a Moravian congregational town. Daily demonstrations, Winkler bakery, tavern restaurant, shops, museum and gallery. New, in 1998, is the Children's Museum, an interactive history museum for children ages 4 to 12. You should allow the best part of a day to see all the many homes and exhibits.
