Morrow Mountain State Park - Albemarle
A series of impoundments of the Yadkin River have created some very attractive lakes and recreation areas. Here, just below the Baden Lake dam, the Yadkin River is met by the Uwharrie and the combined waterway becomes the Pee Dee River. Because of another impoundment downstream, this is also the beginning of Lake Tillery. The series of hills along the Uwharrie River, and continuing along the Pee Dee, is the Uwharrie Mountain Range which is considered by geologists to be one of the most ancient. Most of the remains of these ancient mountains (typical peak elevation is only 900 feet) is preserved in the Uwharrie National Forest on the east side of the rivers and by Morrow Mountain State Park on the west. The natural environment around these mountains includes a great variety of flora and animals as well as peace and contentment for those of us who like to escape from life's fastlane and enjoy what nature has to offer. Morrow Mountain at 936 feet isn't much of a mountain compared to the 4,000+ foot peaks of the Blue Ridge to the west. But the moderately strenuous three-mile climb to its peak rewards you with a panorama worth every breath.
There are 106 tent/trailer campsites plus a primitive camping area.
The park has over 30 miles of trails including 5 great hiking trails (there are three peaks to climb) plus a bridle path that circumnavigates the park.
There is a convenient boat ramp across from the mouth of the Uwharrie River. Canoes may be rented daily during June through August and weekends April, May, September and October (day-time hours only). There is much to explore from the water: Uwharrie River and Mountain Creek are especially productive for bird watching and Lake Tillery extends fifteen miles to the South. Fishing (bluegill, crappie, perch and bass) requires a NC license.
The picnic shelter, six of the family campsites, one group campsite (including the adjacent showerhouses) are all wheelchair friendly. So are the bathrooms in the lodge, the swimming pool and bathhouse as well as the fishing deck at the lake.
Park Hours: November through February 8a-6p; March and October 8a-7p; April, May and September 8a-8p; June through August 8a-9p. Office hours: 8:30a-4:30p Mon thru Fri. Gates are locked when the park is not in operation (opened only for emergency situations). The park is closed Christmas Day.
Postal address: 49104 Morrow Mountain Road, Albemarle, NC 28001. Park Office: 704-982-4402; Fax: 704-982-5323
Directions: From Albemarle take NC-740 to SR-1798 (about 3½ miles from US-52 in town) and turn right. (There is a sign.) Morrow Mountain and the sister peaks are the 'humps' you'll see ahead of you. Continue 2 miles on SR-1798 and it takes you into the park.

Morrow Mountain State Park (Albemarle)
The park is well decked out with over 30 miles of trails - 5 great hiking trails (there are three peaks to climb) and four short, easy loops. The longer, more serious trails, are in their natural state (except, of course, for wear and tear from many feet). They are well blazed to give you the feel of an unspoiled natural setting.
Then there is a bridle path (actually an old forest road) that circumnavigates the parks boundary beginning, and ending, at a horse trailer parking lot near the entrance to the park. This is an 8-mile loop around Hattaway, Sugarloaf and Morrow Mountains plus a stretch along the shore of Lake Tillery. Equestrians have some 16 miles of bridle trails available. Some of these are shared hiking trails (those marked with red blazes).
Nature Trail (0.5 mi.
easy)
This short, easy to stroll path has been constructed to allow you to easily see much of
the interesting natural history of the area. The Uwharrie Mountains are thought to be
among the most ancient mountain ranges on our earth. This trail, in conjunction with the
Natural History Museum, is an easy approach to a better understanding of this unique
ecology.
Fall Mountain
Trail (4.1 mi. - moderate)
This starts at the boat ramp, loops around Fall mountain (providing several good views of
the Kron House). After coming arount the mountain it follows the Lake Tillery shoreline
briefly then loops up a ridge (giving a great view) and then back down to the boat ramp
area. The Fall Mountain Trail can be combined with the Three
Rivers Trail to give you a 5 mile, easy to moderate trail.
Hattaway
Mountain Trail (2.0 mi. - strenuous)
Hattaway Mountain Trail is a loop trail around Hattaway Mountain which provides just the
right setting for the hiker desiring a workout. Although the Uwharrie Mountains are as
high as the Blue Ridge to the west, they are every bit as rugged and challenging. You'll
enjoy the view from the top.
Laurel Trail (0.6 mi.
- easy)
Laurel Trail is a short, easy loop around the cabins (near the Natural History Museum).
The Sugarloaf Mountain Trail starts here.
Morrow Mountain
Trail (3.0 mi. - moderate)
Breaking out from the Sugarloaf Mountain Trail,
the Morrow Mountail Trail climbs up Morrow Mountain. Near the top it becomes Mountain Loop Trail. It then comes down the north ridge to rejoin Sugarloaf Mountain Trail
about 600 yards west of its origin.
Mountain Loop
Trail (0.8 mi. - easy)
This is a short, easy path around the peak of Morrow Mountain (see Morrrow Mountain Trail).
Rocks Trail (2.6 mi. -
easy)
Rocks Trail leads from the briddle path to Lake Tillery. You'll see why it has been named
Rocks Trail.
Sugarloaf
Mountain Trail (2.8 mi. - strenuous)
Sugarloaf runs from the cabins, skirts the base of Sugarloaf Mountain and ends at the
equestrian parking area. If you want to add challenge to your hike you can turn left on Morrow Mountail Trail, climb Morrow Mountain then come
down the ridge and rejoin Sugarloaf Trail.
Three Rivers Trail
(0.6 mi. - easy)
This is a very easy loop by Lake Tillery boat ramp. If you combine it with the Fall Mountain Trail you'll have a five mile hike that is
still easy to moderate. There are several good views of the Kron House and Lake Tillery
from the Fall Mountain Trail.
see: Morrow Mountain State Park for more information about the park.
