Rivers Bridge State Park - Allendale SC

Though an historic site, South Carolina has provided 25 campsites with water and electricity and a nearby heated restroom (with hot showers). All of the campsites will accommodate RVs up to 30 feet (2 can accommodate 40 footers). A dump station is available. Facilities also include sheltered picnic tables and the Lupine trail, an easy half-mile loop. No boats or boat ramp in the park (there is a private ramp about a half mile away) though fishing (bream, crappie and catfish) is allowed in the Salkehatchie River (requires SC license, of course). The campsites are on a first come first served basis except 2 which may be reserved for handicapped individuals.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Rivers Bridge is the only state park in South Carolina that commemorates the Civil War. Educational programs and real-life scenarios are held during the summer to give visitors some idea of what military life was like in the Civil War. Here, General Sherman's Union Army fought Confederate soldiers who, though vastly outnumbered, held the bridge for two days before being forced to retreat. This was the only major resistance encountered by Sherman's army on its infamous march through the state.

From April through August the park is open daily from 9 am.to 9 pm. The rest of the year the park is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays and, during Standard Time, closes at 6 pm. (Park hours do not apply to campers inside and registered.)

Located about 10 miles east of Allendale on SC-641 (when you cross the  watch for the sign. Entrance will be on your left. From I-95 take exit 57 westbound on SC-64 for 19 miles to the intersection of SC-641. Turn left, continue another 3½ miles. Watch for the sign, - entrance will be on your right.
