Boone's Cave State Park (Churchland - near Lexington)
While one of the smallest state parks in the North Carolina Park System, Boone's Cave has a strong attraction beyond the fact that it is another cave. Some three dozen species of native wildflows can be viewed here including Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel (which are normally found only in the more mountainous areas). The park's 110 acres accomodate a picnic area, several hiking trails, an old cabin said to have built by the Boone family 200 years ago, and, of course, the cave. The cave is very small, about 80 feet in length, and the ceiling is so low you have to crawl on your hands and knees.
This is a day-use park but a very peaceful place to relax overlooking the Yadkin River. Taks exit 82 from I-85 onto NC-150 to Churchland (about 5 miles) and watch for the sign. Postal address: Boone's Cave State Park - 49104 Morrow Mountain Road, Albemarle NC 28001. Phone: 336-528-6514.
