Sandwiched between the Great Smokies on the north and the Cheoah Mountains on the south, Fontana Lake is a narrow, east-west TVA impoundment very popular with outdoor enthusiasts. There are a number of areas on both sides of the lake available for hiking and biking. On the north side (Great Smoky Mountains) is the famed Appalachian Trail and the dozes on side trails. On the south side of the lake are several Recreation Areas, including the Tsali, with many more, less challenging trails. If you are expecting to spend your nights by the trail, there are many, primative campsites (both sides of the lake). The regulations governing camping on the north (Great Smokies National Park) side are more restrictive and a 'back couontry camping permit is absolutely required. The Tsali Rec Area is a peninsula at the eastern end of Fontana Lake. We mention this separately from the 'Fontana Lake area' (above) because this area is uniquely popular, especially with the cyclists, in North Carolina. There are also many great equestrian and hiking trails on the peninsula. The trails are easy to moderate in challenge (elevations only rise about 300 feet maximum) . It is very important to remember that bikes and horses share the trails on a scheduled basis. Phone the Cheoah Ranger District office in Robbinsville (828-479-6431) for the season's schedule. Hiking is unrestricted.
From NC-28 west of Bryson City, at Graham-Swain County line, take the Forest Service Road north to the Tsali area.
