Woods Bay State Park - OlantaDo you love mysteries of nature? Here is one that has stumped the experts. Woods Bay State Park was created to protect a natural phenomenon known as a Carolina Bay. A Carolina Bay is an elliptical depression in the ground like, perhaps, an ancient meteor crater. The Carolina Bays here are part of a swampy habitat which even includes a family of alligators. There is a brief, easy to negotiate nature trail. A board walk allows you to peek at the swamp (if you sit quietly for a while the whole place will come to life before your eyes) and canoes are available (only $3/hour) for a relaxed exploration of a well-marked canoe trail. This is a day-use-only park but no entrance or parking fees are charged. Most Carolina Bays are found in the coastal plains of the Carolinas. Woods Bay offers a variety of natural habitats in which many species of wildlife can be found. Visitors to this 1,541-acre state park can enjoy a boardwalk and a canoe trail extending into the bay and a trail around the mill pond. From I-95 take exit #146 and follow Norwood Road 5.7 miles (toward Lake City and Olanta). Turn right at the state park directional sign and follow the series of signs to the park. The park is open from 9a to 6p year round (except Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and is staffed by a full-time ranger/naturalist. Mail address: 11020 Woods Bay Road, Olanta SC 29114. Phone: (843) 659-4445.
