Falls Lake State Recreation Area - Wake Forest

The Falls Lake (reservoir) just north of Raleigh-Durham is a recreation haven for the residents of the region. An extensive recreation has been developed at the south end of the lake near the dam. Maintained as part of the NC State Park system as the Falls Lake State Recreation Area, it is one of the more developed properties. There are 7 distinct recreation sites in this recreation area:

*NOTE: the Holly Point, Sandling Beach and Shinleaf areas have closed for the winter. They will reopen March 16 2005.

DIRECTIONS: Falls Lake is at the intersection of NC-98 (east-west highway connecting Durham and Wake Forest) and NC-50 (north-south highway connecting Raleigh and Creedmoor).

From I-85 exit 191 (Butner) follow NC-56 east to Creedmoor and NC-50. Turn right on NC-50 and head south to Falls Lake. Just after you cross the lake you will see the park offices on your left.

From Raleigh I-440 exit 7 follow NC-50 north, crossing NC-98 to the park office (on your right just before you cross the lake).

B. W. Wells - Falls Lake State Recreation Area (Wake Forest)

There is a  one mile (loop), moderate hiking trail. Biking is prohibited on the path.

Special note: B.W. Wells home and interpretive area is just a short walk from the camping area. If you have any interest in nature and our environment contact the park office for a scheduled tour  (you'll be glad you did!).

There are parking spaces designated for persons with disabilities. There are no campsites at B.W. Wells designed specifically for wheelchairs (see: Rolling View and Shinleaf). The bathhouse and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

B.W. Wells is designed specifically for group camping. 14 improved group campsites - each accommodating up to 35 people. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, benches, grills, water and a campfire ring. There is also a centrally located restroom/showerhouse.

Unoccupied/unreserved campsites are available on a first-come basis. Park Hours: Nov thru Feb 8a-6p; Mar and Oct 8a-7p; Apr, May and Sep 8a-8p; Jne thru Aug 8a-9p. Office hours: 8a-5p Mon thru Fri. Park closed Christmas Day. Park gates are locked when officially closed except for emergency situations. Call the park office (919-676-1027) prior to your departure to confirm camping dates.

Rollingview Marina, a privately owned/operated full-service marina, is also located on the lake .

Directions:
From I-85 exit 191 (Butner) follow NC-56 east to Creedmoor and NC-50. Turn right on NC-50 and head south to Falls Lake. After you cross the lake you will encounter the intersection of NC-98. Turn left on NC-98 (toward Wake Forest) and proceed to Stoney Hill Road; turn left and follow it to Bud Morris Road; turn left again, continue to Bent Road and turn left and on into the park.

From Raleigh I-440 exit 7 follow NC-50 north to the junction of NC-98. Turn right on NC-98 (toward Wake Forest) and proceed to Stoney Hill Road; turn left and follow it to Bud Morris Road; turn left again, continue to Bent Road and turn left and on into the park.

Beaver Dam - Falls Lake State Recreation Area (Wake Forest)

There are parking spaces designated for persons with disabilities. The bathhouse and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. There are six accessible picnic sites and accessible picnic shelters as well as the fishing pier. The beach can be reached via a gently sloping concrete pathway which extends all the way to the water.

While there are no camping facilities, Beaver Dam has 188 picnic tables scattered around under the trees. All have grills. Beaver Dam also has 5 eight-table picnic shelters and 4 twelve-table shelters for larger groups. Restrooms are conveniently located. There is also a very nice, sandy beach for swimmers and a well-maintained, modern bathhouse with changing facilities.

Beaver Dam has a boat ramp but gasoline fueled boats are not permitted. A canoe access is at Old Weaver Trail (north end of Beaverdam Lake).

Highway 50 - Falls Lake State Recreation Area - Wake Forest

The primary use of Highway 50 is fishing and there are several boat ramps giving access to Falls Lake. There are no camping facilities (see Beaver Dam, entrance one mile north (and on the opposite side) on NC-50). Highway 50 does have some picnic tables. Restrooms are conveniently located.

Holly Point - Falls Lake State Recreation Area - Wake Forest

Holly Point, the newest of the campgrounds at Falls Lake, has about 156 campsites, with water and electric hookups or no-hookups available. A conveniently located dump station will be appreciated by RV-ers. 2 swim beaches and a boat ramp are strictly for camper use only. Holly Point also has a hiking trail

Rolling View - Falls Lake State Recreation Area - Wake Forest

While there are no hiking trails, there are several, short foot paths. Biking is prohibited on the paths. Swimmers will welcome the very attractive, sandy swimming beach. A nicely maintained, modern bathhouse is handy for changing.

There is a 4-lane boat ramp at Rolling View.

There are parking spaces designated for persons with disabilities. The picnic shelters, restrooms, and bathhouse and community building are all wheelchair accessible. There also are several campsites designed specifically for wheelchairs. The beach can be reached via a gently sloping concrete pathway which extends all the way to the water.

Camping at Rolling View is available year-round.  82 campsites for RV's have electric and water hookups. Another 35 campsites are for tent/trailer use. Each site has a tent pad, picnic table and grill. Rolling View also has four group camping sites for camping clubs and other larger groups. The group sites have picnic tables, benches, grills, water and a campfire ring. A community building has a large meeting room and kitchen facilities (reservations required). Showers, restrooms and a dump station are conveniently sited.

Sandling Beach - Falls Lake State Recreation Area - Wake Forest

Two short trails, Woodland Nature trail (.7mile, moderately easy) and Shelter Trail (1.0 miles, very easy) allow a better look at the area flora. (No bikes on trails, please.)

Shinleaf - Falls Lake State Recreation Area - Wake Forest

A two-mile protion of the Mountains-To-Sea Trail more-or-less follows the shore line at Shinleaf. And, of course, you can get your exercise carrying stuff to and from your car in the parking lot to your camp site. Shinleaf is intended for beginning backpacking campers. 89 campsites are thoughtfully sited in the woods well away from the parking lot (typically a quarter-mile). Each is equipped with a tent pad, picnic table and a grill. Mulch toilets and drinking water are located within easy reach.
