Raven Rock State Park - Lillington

Once upon a time this massive, 152-foot high cliff overhanging the Cape Fear River, was home to ravens. The ravens are gone now but the rock is still an attraction for thousands of visitors every year. Raven Rock appears as quite a surprise for many of our visitors. Carolina is full of surprises. Our rivers, some of the most ancient in the world, have eaten their way through the remains of the most ancient of mountains. Millions of years of erosion have created some highly cherished playgrounds for lovers of the out-of-doors and Raven Rock is a good example. A massive, hard, crystalline outcrop, more resistant to erosive forces than the surrounding rock, it hovers over the Cape Fear River far below like the shell of an amphitheater.  Wooden stairs allow you to descend to the base of Raven Rock where you can get the full impact of this geologic wonder. There are a number of excellent vantage points, including a very special stone balcony. You won't want to miss Raven Rock

The park straddles the Cape Fear River - the South Access Area is considered the main park and receives more visitors. It is also more easily accessed from US-421. If you are an equestrian you would probably be more interested in the North Access Area which is where some seven miles of bridle paths will be found. A parking area, mount unloading area and adjacent picnic area is on River Road (see North Access Area access directions).

The Southern Access Area invites you with a dozen miles of official trail plus many more miles of unofficial trails. These trails are mostly interconnected loops pasing through varied terrain. The oak and hickory forest is regrowth but it has been so long since the last lumberjack felled a tree that they now appear as virgin.

31 tables and six grills comprise a picnic area near the mail parking lot. Drinking water, restrooms and the park office are located nearby. All facilities here are wheelchair friendly. Lanier Falls can be reached via Lanier Falls Trail (6 mile easy to moderate walk). Most of the trails in the park are interconnected allowing you to vary the distance of your walk. An excellent map is available at the park office.

Raven Rock offers a variety of camping facilities. A group wilderness camp 2 miles from the parking area accommodates up to 200 people (reservations   recommended). A family wilderness campground, approximately 2.5 miles from the parking area, has 5 sites (first-come-first-served). There are also 6 campsites along the Cape Fear Canoe Trail for canoeists (reservations required) All campsites are available year-round.

Park Hours: November through February 8a-7p; March and October 8a-7p; April, May and September 8a-8p; June through August 8a-9p. Office hours: 8a-5p Monday through Friday. Park gates are locked when officially closed except for emergency situations. The park is closed Christmas Day.

Postal address: 3009 Raven Rock Road, Lillington, NC 27546; Park office: 910-893-4888; Fax: 910-814-2200; e-mail: ravenroc@fayettevillenc.com

Directions: Raven Rock State Park is located in Harnett County 6 miles west of Lillington (20 miles east of Sanford). The park is divided two area, one on the north bank and the other on the south bank of the Cape Fear River. Most activities are in the section on the south bank which is considered the main section of the park. The bridle paths, however, are in the section on the
north bank.

Directions to Southern (Main) Section: Turn off US 421 at Mamers and follow Raven Rock Road (SR-1314) for 3 miles to the park entrance.

Directions to Northern Section (bridle paths): Take US-401/US-421//NC-210 north out of Lillington, across the Cape Fear River bridge, to where the highways split. Turn left staying on US-401 and continue another 3 miles to SR-1412. Turn left and and continue another 3.5 miles to River Road (SR-1418). Turn left and continue to the parking lot (about a half-mile in on your left).

Raven Rock State Park Trails

Hiking Trails

Scenic trails invite you to journey into the park's interior. More than 12 miles of hiking trails let you wander through a variety of terrain.
Raven Rock Loop Trail (2.1 miles, easy) travels through a hardwood forest. Wooden stairs going down the face of the river bluff lead to the base of Raven Rock, where the river bank provides a place to examine the area beneath the overhang. A stone balcony along the trail overlooks the river and the flood plains beyond. Connecting trails (easy to moderate) include:

American Beech Nature Trail
An easy-to-stroll ½ self-guiding nature trail across from the park office, the American Beech Nature Trail gives you an easy means to learning more about the ecology and flora of this area. The park rangers are always eager to share there knowledge with you and have some printed hand-outs you can take withyou to read at your leisure.

Campbell Creek Loop
Campbell Creek is a loop which can be combined (and usually is) with the
Lanier Falls Trail. The Lanier Falls overlook will undoubtably be your target but the walk along Campbell Creek is certainly well worth the effort. Actually, although classified as 'moderate ', most of the trail is very easy to negotiate. It is long (5 or 6 miles around the loop depending on your routing) and if you are not used to walking be sure you have good walking shoes and take plenty of time..

Fish Traps Trail
This is a spur extending from the end of the park entrance road. It is a 1 mile (round trip) spur to the Fish Traps overlook. Ask the ranger about this.

Lanier Falls Trail
The Lanier Falls Trail is really a short (300 yards long) spur extending from the
Campbell Creek Loop Trail to the Lanier Falls overlook. make an easy to moderate round trip.

Little Creek Loop
Accessed from
Raven Rock Loop Trail, the Little Creek Loop leads to the canoe and group campgrounds downstream. The total loop (both trails together) is a little over 3 miles but is very easy strolling. Coming back from the campgrpunds along Little Creek is particularly enjoyable. The trail continues (actually becomes Raven Rock Loop Trail) back to the main parking lot where you can continue around the American Beech Nature Trail Loop.

Northington's Ferry Trail
This is a spur trail (2.2 miles round trip) which takes you to the Cape Fear River overlook and the old ferry landing at the mouth of Campbell Creek.

Raven Rock Loop Trail
Probably the most popular trail in the park, Raven Rock Loop Trail is the access to the Raven Rock overlooks and the steps to the base of Raven Rock (see the Park description for more about Raven Rock). The round trip is an easy 2 mile stroll but you can elect to lengthen you pleasure by continuing around the
Little Creek Loop from the Raven Rock overlook - then returning a;long Little Creek. This makes a total of a little over 3 miles.

Bridle Trails

The park's only bridle trails are on the north side of the Cape fear River. (Horses are not permitted on the hiking trails in the South Park Access Area.) There is a parking lot and unloading area, with an adjacent picnic area, on River Road. The trails wind through the beautiful oak and hickory forest. See: Directions to River Road access to park.

East Loop Bridle Trail (3.5 miles, easy)

From the unloading area at River Road the bridle path follows the road eastward to the eastern boundary of the park. It then cuts south (you cross a small creek here) to the Cape fear River, bends westward and then meanders back to the north an some wide 'S' curves to the unloading area. about 200 yards before the end of the trail you'll see where the West Loop comes in. Going left here onto the West Loop path will add another 3½ miles. This is also how you get to the remains of the old Northingham Lock and Dam.

West Loop Bridle Trail (3.5 miles, easy)

From the unloading area at River Road the bridle path follows the road westward to the western boundary of the park. It then cuts south and makes some sweeping 'S' curves to the Northingham Spur which takes you to the remains of the old Northingham Lock and Dam. Continuing on from the head of the spur the trail bends north, follows Avents Creek about 700 yards, then crosses it and merges with the East Loop. Bear to the left and you come out at the unloading area.

Canoe Trail

Raven Rock Canoe Trail (56 miles, easy to moderate)

From the put-in area at the NC-42 bridge 9 miles upstream from the park to the take-out area 6 miles downstream from the park is a great, 15 mile stretch of easily paddled river even novices can enjoy in safety (except during periods of high water). The park maintains 6 campsites on the south river bank at Little Creek. There are no put-in/take-out areas within the park. There is a brief stretch of class II or III (depending on water flow - see river reports below) rapids and the Buckhorn Dam (an easy portage). This is an ideal overnight paddle (spending the night at one of the park campsites). For current information and to make reservations for a campsite (required) contact the park office.
