Cliffs of the Neuse State Park (Goldsboro)
Rising over 90 feet above the Neuse River, these unique sand cliffs preserve the geological history of these ancient mountains. An observation deck enables visitors to get a better look without risking damage to the cliffs and avoiding the risk of falls. A museum near the northern end of the cliffs houses dioramas depicting the geology and the natural history of the area. A ranger is available during the summer months to explain the plant and animal life and other natural features of the park. Saturday evening talks describing interesting features are also conducted in the amphitheater next to the museum during the summer months.
This 750 acre park was really created to protect the cliffs. It now offers swimming, fishing, camping (including some primative, group camping facilities), 4 short foot paths and, of course, the 90 foot high view of the Neuse River from the observation deck which is the primary attraction.
Only the parking area and pathways to the museum are wheelchair friendly.
Four short, easy foot paths are accessible from the parking lot near the observation deck. They are all sandy, complete with foot bridges where necessary and provide a closer scrutiny of the native flora.
100 picnic tables and 10 grills are located next to the
main parking lot and the lake. There is also a nice, brick picnic shelter with 12 tables
and 2 fireplaces. Reservations are suggested.
Swimming facilities at the 11 acre lake include a bathhouse and a refreshment stand. These
facilities are open from 10am to 6pm throughout the summer months.
River and stream fishing is permitted along the banks of the Neuse River. NC fishing
regulations are strictly enforced. Catches include bass, bluegill, channel catfish and
shad.
Private boats are not permitted on the lake. Rowboats are
available for rent during the summer months.
Park Hours: November through February 8a-6p; March and October 8a-7p; April, May and
September 8a-8p; June through August 8a-9p. Office hours: 8a-5p Monday through Friday.
Park gates are locked when officially closed except for emergency situations. The park is
closed Christmas Day.
