About Daufuskie IslandDaufuskie is a remote island southeast of Hilton Head Island and only accessable by boat. Populated by descendants of freed slaves who are very independent and self-sufficient sustaining themselves from their natural surroundings. Recently part of the island has been developed into resorts. Several Hilton Head marinas offer scheduled tours to the island. The beach is beautiful and, so far, relative unpopulated. We have been informed that the public is no longer welcome in the resort area. Incidentally, the island was the setting for Pat Conroy’s novel "The Water is Wide", later released as the movie "Conrack".
