Jacksonville area BOAT RAMPS
There are over a third of a million boats registered in Carolina. Most find their way to our fabulous waterways via boat ramps. Unfortunately there is no single source revealing the locations of these ramps. We are working with the Wildlife Commissions to build a list which will include directions to help you find these ramps. This directory will be a-building for some time to come! We would certainly appreciate any information our visitors can e-mail us - to: editor@Carolina-Now.com

Hammocks Beach State Park - Jacksonville

East of Jacksonville, near the town of Swansboro (about halfway to Morehead City) is a very special island paradise: Bear Island. Accessible only by passenger ferry, or private boat, Bear Island seems custom-made for the 'Four-S' folks (Sun, Sand, Sea, and Sky).

Here, the loggerhead sea turtle crawls ashore under the bleaching blaze of the summers full moon to carve her nest in the sand. Here the venturesome amatuer naturalist observes rare marine life in the surrounding tidal waters and mudflats.  And, here, is one of the least known North Carolina State Parks: Hammocks Beach.

A easy-to-walk, 3.8 mile trail runs along the beach from Bogue Inlet to Bear Inlet. A canoe/kayak trail is also available for use. See trails.

A refreshment stand provides light snacks from 10a-5:30p Memorial Day through Labor Day. It is adjacent to the swimming area (on Bear Island).

Park Hours: Sep-May 8a-6p; Jne-Aug 8a-7p. Office hours: 8a-5p Mon thru Fri (Oct thru Apr); 8a-5p daily May-Sep. Gates are locked when the park is not in operation (opened only for emergency situations) .  The park is closed Christmas Day.

Postal address: 1572 Hammocks Beach Road, Swansboro NC 28584. Park office: 910-326-4881; Island: 910-326-3553; Fax: 910-326-2060; e-mail: habe@nternet.net

Directions:
The mainland portion of Hammocks Beach State Park is located near Swansboro (about 17 miles on NC-24 east). From Swansboro, take Hammocks Beach Road (SR-1511) to the park entrance. The passenger ferry to Bear Island departs from here operating from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The trip to the island takes about 25 minutes. Fees are $2 for adults, $1 for children (4-12) and free for children age (3 and under). As schedules and fees are always subject to change we suggest you call the
park office before your departure.

Hammocks Beach State Park Trails

A easy-to-walk, 3.8 mile trail runs along the beach from Bogue Inlet to Bear Inlet.

A canoe/kayak trail is also available for use. There are markers placed along the route which serve as trail guides and to flag points of interest. Currents in the Inland Waterway can be dangerous at times. If you are not familiar with the area contact the park office for current status.

There are 4 sites for canoe campers on Bear Island. Contact the park office for specifics.

IMPORTANT NOTE: During the Loggerhead Turtles' nesting season landings on the Atlantic Ocean side of the island are prohibited during the period from the night before through the night following a full moon.  This is to minimize as much as possible any disturbance of their nesting.
