Laurinburg area BOAT RAMPS
There are over a third of a million boats registered in Carolina. Most find their way to our fabulous waterways via boat ramps. Unfortunately there is no single source revealing the locations of these ramps. We are working with the Wildlife Commissions to build a list which will include directions to help you find these ramps. This directory will be a-building for some time to come! We would certainly appreciate any information our visitors can e-mail us - to: editor@Carolina-Now.com

Lumber River State Park - Lumberton

First they bought some land along the banks of the river. Then they bought a few more thousand acres - all destined (State Legislature permitting) into a beautifully developed park on one of the most beautiful rivers in the Carolinas. The NC State Park folks are preserving the prime portion of the Lumber River - a true, black-water river like one would expect to find only in South Carolina and Georgia. Declared a National Scenic River some twenty years ago, the Lumber River nourishes prime bottomland forest heavily laced with Spanish moss-draped oaks and black-water swamps with their exquisite water tupelo and baldcypress. Ducks are everywhere. Watch awhile and you will see turtles, snakes and even an occasional otter. The birds are fresh off the multicolored pages of a bird book of southern swamp birds.

Currently the park consists of two areas: Queen Anne and Piney Island. The former is on the south side of US-74 and the latter just north of that highway (but only accessible from the river). The park office, restrooms and a small picnic area are in the Queen Anne area. These facilities are wheelchair friendly.

The picnic area is tastefully sited on the west bank of the Lumber River. Tables (with grills) under Spanish moss-draped oaks create a very restful setting. A water fountain and restrooms are next to the park office.

Primitive canoe camping is available at the Piney Island area. Three small sites and a large group site are located along an easy overnight section of the Lumber River. Picnic tables are available. All supplies must be packed into and out of the site.

Canoeing and fishing are the activities of choice on the Lumber River. Canoe campsites are available up the river at Piney Island. Fishing from the river bank from can be difficult due to the dense vegetation. Most fish from one- or two-person skiffs with outboards. There is a launching area in the Queen Anne access area. Frequently caught are bass, catfish and crappie.  To fish a state fishing license is required; regulations of the Wildlife Resources Commission are strictly enforced.

Park Hours: November through February 8a-6p; March and October 8a-7p; April, May and September 8a-8p; June through August 8a-9p. Office hours: 8a-9p Monday through Friday. Park gates are locked when officially closed except for emergency situations. The park is closed Christmas Day.

Postal address: P.O.Box 10, Orrum, NC 28369-0010; Park office: 910-628-9844; Fax: 910-628-8172; e-mail: ncs1439@interpath.com

Directions: From I-95 exit 14 take US-74 east 11 miles to SR-2225. Turn left (south)and follow SR-225 about 5 miles to SR-2246. Turn left and follow SR-2246 into the Queen Anne access area of the park. (Piney Island is accessible only from the Lumber River.)

Lumber River State Park Trails

The Lumber River is one of the most beautiful rivers in the Carolinas.

The Lumber River Canoe Trail can be an easy float down this lazy river with nothing more exciting the watching the activities of the many small animals in the water and along the banks. In recent years, however, we have had a number of hurricanes and strong winds which have made the river a virtual obstacle course. The rangers and local fishermen work hard trying to keep the river free of obstacles but it is a never ending battle. We strongly recommend you check with the park rangers before planning your excursion.

Almost any bridge downstream of Laurinburg serves as a put-in site. Downstream of Lumberton NC-72 is a well used put-in site. SR-2123 and SR-2121 are also good. Downstream from there is swamp with no access until you get to US-74 (which is not recommended). A good take-out is at Fair Bluff unless you want to quit at the Queen Anne Access Area of Lumber River State Park.

Primitive canoe camping is available at the Piney Island area just upstream from the US-74 bridge. The facilities include 3 individual sites and 1 large group site. Picnic tables are available. All supplies, including water, must be packed into and out of the site.
