One of North Carolina's better outfitted parks, Lake Norman State Park has 33 individual campsites (with the usual picnic table and grill), 2 group campsites and a central washhouse with hot showers. The campsites are about 200 yards from the parking area and are nicely situated in the woods and private. Sorry, no hookups for RVs.
There is a boat ramp and fishing (with NC license) is permitted. Here you have a lake on a lake. The park has its own 33 acre lake which is a small impoundment of Hicks Creek before it flows into Lake Norman. The park rents canoes and pedal boats for use on the 33 acre impoundment. Rentals are available June through Labor Day. Private boats are allowed on Lake Norman but not in the impoundment. There is a swimming area at Lake Norman open daily from 10a to 6p April through October. Swimming is no longer permitted in the Hicks Creek impoundment.
An easy-to-negotiate trail, appropriately named Lake Shore Trail, affords an assortment of views of Lake Norman and Hicks Creek. If you don't want to go all the way around the loop there is a bypass midway appropriately named Short Turn Trail. The trail makes for a pleasant after-dinner stroll. Park rangers are on site throughout the summer and hold frequent 'nature programs'.
Park Hours: November through February 8a-6p; March & October 8a-7p; April, May and September 8a-8p; June through August 8a-9p. Office hours: 8a-5p Monday through Friday. Gates are locked when park is closed but will be opened in emergencies. The park closed Christmas Day .

From I-77 take exit 42 if coming from Charlotte or exit 45 if coming from Statesville. Follow NC-115 to Troutsville. At Wagner Street turn west (toward the lake), continue 1½ miles to State Park Road (SR-1330). Turn right and drive into the park. There are several signs which will direct you to the park entrance.

Alder Trail - 0.8 miles
Alder is a short loop which takes off from the picnic area near the park entrance. It is a
very neat, and easy stroll following the shore line of a little peninsula jutting out into
the Hicks Creek impoundment.
Lake Shore Trail - 6.7 miles
This easy-to-negotiate path affords an assortment of views of Lake Norman and Hicks Creek.
There are nice bridges across the little streams and other damp areas. Ample white blazes
assure you won't lose your way. If you don't want to go all the way around the loop there
is a bypass midway appropriately named . . .
Short Turn Trail - 0.6 miles
This connects the east side of the Lake Shore Trail loop to the west side, approximately
halving the total distance. (Short Turn has red blazes.) This combination of the two
trails makes for a pleasant after-dinner stroll.

Lookout Shoals Lake: Sharon - Iredell County NC
From 140 exit 141 (Sharon School Road), follow SR-1502 north 1.7 miles to SR-1006 (Island Ford Road). Turn left and continue just 0.4 mile to SR-1530 (Old Lion Road). Take the right fork and it is about 0.8 mile to the access area.
