There is a regional public beach access point to a very nice beach approximately 2 miles east of Atlantic Beach at the end of Highway 58. This beach is in Fort Macon State Park which offers many other recreational activities and facilities (including a bath house). Lifeguards are on duty during daylight hours in the summer through Labor Day weekend. The center also has 'touch tables', films and other special programs and exhibits. There are three picnic tables between the parking lots and a ½ mile nature trail from which the remnants of the original marine forest may be observed. Admission FEE. The park is 7 miles south of Atlantic Beach on SR-1201.

Beaufort area Public Beach Access There is a regional public beach access point on the Morehead City side of the Newport River near the US-70 bridge. (This is not an Atlantic Ocean beach.) Cape Lookout National Seashore is accessible only through private ferries (leaving from Harkers Island, Davis, Atlantic, Beaufort and Ocracoke) or your personal boat. A 55 mile long section of the Outer Banks, this National Seashore runs from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. It includes three barrier, all undeveloped, which make up this portion of the Outer Banks. To quote the NPS, "They may seem barren and isolated but they offer many natural and historical features that can make a visit very rewarding."
