Positioned majestically for over two-and-one-half centuries on the bank of the Santee River, the Hampton Plantation was one of the finest of the Lowcountry rice plantations. The mansion was the home of Archibald Rutledge (South Carolina poet laureate) and rang with the voices of such historic notables as George Washington, General Lafayette, and Francis Marion. The interior is unfurnished to, we are told, illustrate its architectural features.
Now under the protection of the South Carolina State Parks system, it is open to viewing by our residents and visitors. Open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4p. (tours may be arranged by appointment). FEE $2. Mail address: 1950 Rutledge Road, McClellanville, SC 29458. Phone: (843) 546-9361
If coming from Georgetown:, follow US-17 south about 16 miles. You will cross over two Santee River bridges. The first road on your right is Rutledge Road. Follow it for about three miles. The park entrance will be on your right.
If coming from Charleston, follow US 17 north, past Awendaw to Rutledge Road (about 30 miles from I-526). Turn left, go three more miles to the park entrance (on your right).
