Important
Notes about access to area Beaches:
Myrtle Beach, the city, is the economic hub of the Grand
Strand. There are other communities up and down the Strand, e.g. North Myrtle Beach and
Surfside Beach, but visitors usually consider the whole area as Myrtle Beach. However
there are big differences. As you move further, north or south, from Myrtle Beach, things
seem to slow down and get less crowded. The giant condos lining the beach are further
apart and there are more vacant lots awaiting new owners and/or new structures.
There is one official public beach access in Myrtle
Beach: Myrtle
Beach State Park. There are almost a dozen of
unofficial access points: those vacant lots. If you cruise Ocean Blvd you will see a break
in the buildings. Your problem is finding a legal parking spot.
If you are lodging in Myrtle Beach you have four options
for beach access.
- stay in a beach-front motel/hotel (most $$)
- stay in a beach-access motel/hotel which has arranged for
beach access (less $$)
- stay in a motel/hotel away from the beach (least $$) and
drive to the beach
- stay in a campground or RV park (many have beach access)
Single night occupancies can be twice the weekly rate and
weekends are almost aways more costly. Like so many things, price is based on
demand. If you can spend a Wednesday night you luck out. If the only time you
can get there is Saturday night you pay. Not only are middle-of-the-week nights less
expensive, it is also easier to get reservations and better rooms. During the summer and
during special events the rates zoom with little predictability. If you don't mind a
'camping-out' atmosphere, or have a lot of kids, the cheaper places can be just great.
Option 1 - Beach-front:
Weekly rates vary from around $50/night/single (off
season) to over $200. The less expensive rooms do not overlook the beach. And, when you
want to go to the beach you just walk out the door. No cruising Ocean Boulevard looking
for a parking spot and no search for that parked car when you are ready to go back to your
motel. (Those vacant lots you sneak through to get to the beach all look alike from the
beach side and people frequently get lost!)
Option 2 - Beach-access:
Weekly rates start around $40/night/single (off season).
These lodgings are usually across the road from the beach and have arrangements with their
neighbors on the beach for beach access for their guests. Don't assume that all
lodgings - across the road from the beach - have such an arrangement: ask first!
You save a few bucks and walk a few more steps. Of course, you don't have a room
overlooking the beach - if that is of importance.
Option 3 - No beach access:
Weekly rates start around $30/night/single (off season).
We have found that you can have about as much enjoyment staying away from the beach and
driving there IF you intend to go to shows and other activities. But if your primary
mission is to enjoy the beach - stay at the beach. Most of the off-beach lodgings can tell
you where to find good access points to get on the beach - and what to avoid when parking
your car.
Option 4 - Campgrounds/RV Parks:
This, of course, requires the necessary equipment. There
are many Campgrounds/RV Parks in the area. As with the motel/hotel rates, season and
special events affect the rates. Many of these facilities have good beach access - be sure
to ask first.
