The canal is one of many which were built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to facilitate water transportation throughout South Carolina. The preserved portion of the canal is also of historical significance (click here to read about it) and there is now a state park here featuring nature trails, playground, museum and, of course, fishing (in the Catawba River). About 12 miles south of Rock Hill SC (off US-21). Phone 803-789-5800.

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s depression days, Kings Mountain State Park has been significantly expanded and modernized. A "Living History Farm" is a display of 19th-century cabins and other structures. In September the farm hosts the Pioneer Days Festival, a potpourri of craft displays, live music and other activities of that era.
119 campsites (including 30 RV pull-throughs), RV dump station and even a laundry facility and store (limited groceries, camper supplies, firewood) are available. For the more ambitious, there is a 16-mile, fairly strenuous hiking trail. For those who have mounts, the 17 mile equestrian trail loop meanders through a beautiful wooded area. There is also a campground for equestrians.
Fishing (bass, bream, crappie, catfish) is permitted in the 65-acre lake Privately owned boats are prohibited but row boats are available at the usual $10/day rental fee. Canoes are also available ($5/hour) during the summer months.Even some pedal boats are available, also at $5/hour, during the summer.
From I-85: take exit #8 in North Carolina. Head south on state highway 161. After you cross the NC-SC border the park entrance will be the first black-top road on your right.
From I-77: take exit #77 in Rock Hill and follow SC-5 north (through Rock Hill) all the way to York. In York, turn right (north) onto US 321, proceed on to Filbert and turn left onto SC-161 (the park is 14 miles from York). The park entrance will be on the left.
(The park is adjacent to Kings Mountain National Military Park, a prominent Revolutionary War battleground site.)
Park Hours in April through October are 7a - 9p daily; November through March 8a - 6p daily. Postal address: 1277 Park Road, Blacksburg, SC 29702. Phone: 222-3209
