As the name implies, this is a nature preserve featuring the human as well as natural history of the North Carolina Sandhills. Several dioramas display some of the nocturnal and subterranean animals native to the Sandhills. There is even a beaver pond in the exhibit. During the summer they regularly play a ten-minute multi-media tape exploring the sounds and activities of the native nocturnal residents.
Six hiking trails (including a boardwalk extending into the swamp) allow the visitor to get a good closeup of the native fauna and flora. The rare red-cockaded woodpecker is usually very visible here. There is also a short bridle trail.
Park Hours: November through March 9a-6p; April
through October 9a-7p; Office hours: 9a-6p Monday through Friday. The park is closed
Christmas Day.

Bower's Bog Trail is a short (.3 mile) looping nature trail that begins at the visitors' center and skirts the edge of an upland bog. Look for the ferns and pitcher plants. Much more information about the flora you see from this trail is available at the visitors' center.
Gum Swamp Trail (0.5 mi.) is a short loop (accessed from Pine Barrens Trail) which takes you through a stand of hardwoods then skirts the swamp fed by James Creek.
Holly Road Trail (1.8 mi.) passes through the northern half of the preserve.
Lighter Stump Trail (0.5 mi.) is a short connector uniting Bower's Bog Trail with the Pine Island Trail for those who wish to extend the distance of their walk.
Pine Barrens Trail (1 mi.) starts at the visitor center and loops for one mile through open stands of longleaf pine.
Pine Island Trail is a half-mile loop starting and ending at the eastern point of the Holly Road trail. It features a 300-foot boardwalk giving you a very intimate view of swamp life.
Weymouth Bridle Trail (1.0) is on the north side of the preserve.
