Kings Mountain State Park

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s depression days, Kings Mountain State Park has been significantly expanded and modernized. A "Living History Farm" is a display of 19th-century cabins and other structures. In September the farm hosts the Pioneer Days Festival, a potpourri of craft displays, live music and other activities of that era.

119 campsites (including 30 RV pull-throughs), RV dump station and even a laundry facility and store (limited groceries, camper supplies, firewood) are available. For the more ambitious, there is a 16-mile, fairly strenuous hiking trail. For those who have mounts, the 17 mile equestrian trail loop meanders through a beautiful wooded area. There is also a campground for equestrians.

Fishing (bass, bream, crappie, catfish) is permitted in the 65-acre lake Privately owned boats are prohibited but row boats are available at the usual $10/day rental fee. Canoes are also available ($5/hour) during the summer months.Even some pedal boats are available, also at $5/hour, during the summer.

From I-85: take exit #8 in North Carolina. Head south on state highway 161. After you cross the NC-SC border the park entrance will be the first black-top road on your right.

From I-77: take exit #77 in Rock Hill and follow SC-5 north (through Rock Hill) all the way to York. In York, turn right (north) onto US 321, proceed on to Filbert and turn left onto SC-161 (the park is 14 miles from York). The park entrance will be on the left.

(The park is adjacent to Kings Mountain National Military Park, a prominent Revolutionary War battleground site.)

Park Hours in April through October are 7a - 9p daily; November through March 8a - 6p daily. Postal address: 1277 Park Road, Blacksburg, SC 29702. Phone: 222-3209

Croft State Park - Spartanburg SC

Here's proof that deactivated military bases can be a boon to state residents (and tourists). Croft State Park was an Army training camp during World War II. In fact many of the old Army structures remain. But 7000+ acres makes for a lot of variety. Horse shows and miles and miles of equestrian trails, hiking trails, nature trails, some 50 campsites, picnic areas (free) give an extended menu of activities. Add to these a swimming pool, a lake with paddle boats and tennis courts and it's all within 5 miles of Spartanburg.

Park Hours: April - October 7a - 9p daily, November - March 7a - 6p daily.  Office Hours: 11a - noon daily year round. Postal address: 450 Croft State Park Road, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Phone: 585-1283

From downtown Spartanburg: Follow SC-56 east to the park entrance.
From I-85: take exit #72 (US-176 which becomes I-585 briefly, then US-176 again), go south toward Spartanburg and follow park signs.
From I-26: take exit #22, head eastbound on SC-296 for about 1 mile to SC-295 (Southport Rd). Turn right and follow 295 (you'll pass under the US-221 freeway) to SC 56. Turn right again and proceed about 2 more miles to the park entrance.
