Colleton State Park - St George/Walterboro SCHeadquarters and departure point of the Edisto River and Kayak Trail (56-mile course along the black-water river paradise featuring wildlife and flora unique to the black-water rivers of South Carolina). Camping and picnic facilities. Located on the Edisto River midway between St. George and Walterboro SC. Take exit 68 of I-95 (SC-61) east to US-15 (about 3 miles), turn left; entrance on right. Located in Four Holes Swamp the sanctuary contains the largest remaining virgin stand of bald cypress and tupelo trees in the world. A 1½ mile boardwalk runs from the Visitor's Center taking you through this ancient swamp where an unusual assortment birds and wildflowers can be oberserved. Located about 35 miles NW of Charleston, take I-26 Exit 187 (SC-27) north and watch for signs. Open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9a-5p. (Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.) Gate fees: Adults $5, 6-18 years $2, Children under 6 are free. Summerville area PARKSNote: telephone area code is 843other Summerville area Recreational Facilities Givhans Ferry State Park - Summerville SCOverlooking the site of ferry crossing dating back to the 18th Century, this 988-acre park on the Edisto River is an access point of the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail, a 23 mile canoe/kayak trail between Colleton and Givhans Ferry. The park has 4 cabins and about 25 campsites and picnic tables. There is also a moderately strenuous trail along the bluff that affords splendid views. Givhans Ferry State Park is off SC 61, 16 miles west of Summerville. Park Hours from April - October are 9a - 9p (daily): from November - March the park closes at 6p.
