Mill Creek Park - Pinewood

Here, at the edge of Manchester State Forest, is an unusual opportunity for riders to enjoy one of the few areas of the South Carolina State Palmetto Trail open to equestrians. And the broad array of facilities include stables in addition to campsites, picnic areas, etc. The park is the primary access point for the many hiking and biking trails in the Park and the State Forest. Also open to visitors is an unusual turn-of-the-century hand-hewn lodge complete with kitchen facilities. Fishing is permitted (lake access and a fishing pier) for holders of the South Carolina fishing license.

A number of well-known and very popular events are held at the park through the year. These include the Palmetto State Trail Ride and Wagon Train which is hosted by the National Trail Riders and Wagon Train Association. The park is also the site of the Governor's Trail Ride and Manchester Trail Rider events.

From Sumter take SC-120 to Pinewood. Turn right on SC-261 and watch for the signs. For further information contact the Sumter County Recreation Department, 436-2248, or the Sumter Conventions and Visitors Bureau at 778-5434 or 800-688-4748.

Poinsett State Park - Wedgefield

Poinsett has 4 cabins and 50 campsites, a picnic area, a pleasant, 10-acre lake and lots of trails for hikers and equestrians.

Poinsett State Park provides an excellent example of the geographic and climatic advantages of this area for a laboratory for outdoor education. Hills covered with hardwoods and mountain laurel (usually thought to grow only in higher, cooler country) next to the Wateree Swamp and its Spanish moss draped trees. This 1000-acre park has a full-time naturalist and, if you have questions, you'll probably get answers.

Built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the structures still stand as examples of CCC's excellent, caring effort.

Note: a parking fee is charged. for day-time users - $2 per car or motorcycle and $7 for vehicles with 15 or more passengers.

From I-20 take US 521 (exit #98) south toward Sumter. In about 2 miles you will reach SC-261. Bear bear right and follow SC-261 for approximately 35 miles to the park entrance.

Park Hours in April through October are 9a - 9p (daily); November through March the park closes at 7p. Mailing address: 6660 Poinsett Park Road, Wedgefield, SC 29168. Phone: (803) 494-8177.
