Carolina has trails of every sort and challenge. Along the Savannah River (South Carolina's Fresh Water Coast) the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers has built and maintains many strategically located parks almost all of which have trails. The U.S. National Forests also have many hundreds of trails. Both North and South Carolina maintain extensive state parks most of which also have trails. And, of course, there are many trails maintained by the various local communities. Blackwater rivers are world famous for their enchanting canoe and kayak trails. Not only is paddling exceptionally easy due to the slow flow of the waterways, but the abundance of wildlife, both in the streams and on the shores, is an attraction in of itself. The rivers and bays along the Carolina coast also offer excellent opportunities for pleasurable paddling. There are also many rest areas along these trails where you can pull your craft out of the water, explore a shore trail or even spend the night.

Most of the trails are for pedestrians but many are shared by bikers. Equestrian trails are not as numerous but there are some excellent ones. (Many of the state parks also have facilities for horses and trailers.) Although most trails are shared use, we have listed the Carolina trails by the mode of locomotion. Hence, shared trails are listed under all applicable categories.
