Other Elizabethtown Recreational Facilities
One of the few remaining Carolina bay lakes, Jones Lake State Park allows canoeing, fishing, picnicking and camping (tent/trailer). For group camping facilities see Singletary Lake State Park.
Boating is a popular pastime here. A (free) boat
ramp is located just west of the picnic area. Motorized craft must have motors of 10 HP or
less. Canoes and paddle boats are available for rent at the boathouse. Game fish are
limited, because of the acidity of the water, to blue spotted sunfish, catfish, chain
pickerel, chub suckers and yellow perch. They do bite readily and this is an ideal
environment for the younger fishing enthusiast. All state regulations (including licenses)
apply.
Park Hours: November through February 8a-6p; March and October 8a-7p; April, May and
September 8a-8p; June through August 8a-9p. Office hours: 8a-5p Mon thru Fri. Gates are
locked when the park is not in operation (opened only for emergency situations) .
The park is closed Christmas Day.

Other Whiteville Recreational Facilities
Waccamaw State Park is probably the least 'developed' in the NC State Park system. But it really doesn't need 'developing'. The 3 primitive campsites are designed, and reserved, for groups (5 to 20 people) only. All have fire pits, tables and grills. Anything you might need (including water) must be 'packed' in. There is a pit toilet near each of the sites.
There are picnic facilities (24 tables and 10 grills) located near the dock. The picnic facilities are available to all visitors.
The nearest state park camping facilities for individual campers is at Jones Lake State Park near Elizabethtown (about 27 miles north of Whiteville). Just take US-74/76 to Whiteville, turn right on US-701. Elizabethtown is another 23 miles. See Jones Lake State Park for directions to the park.

Lake Waccamaw is the largest of the Carolina Bays. Also, unlike most of the others, it is not acidic (due to the presence of a large limestone formation) and supports an usually broad variety of aquatic plant and animal life. It also supports game fish (e.g., largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, sunfish, yellow perch). Fishing is allowed from a small dock or from boats. (The dock may not be used to launch boats nor do they allow boats to be tied to the dock.)
The lake is best explored by canoe but there are no boat ramps within the park. Columbus County, however, has graciously provided a ramp just a few hundred yards from the park entrance (on SR-1947). The Wildlife Resources Commision also has a ramp on SR-1967 (on the west side of the lake). There is no charge for use of either ramp. If you have, or can get, a canoe or kayak you will certain enjoy exploring the mix of aquatic vegetation near the lake shore. The lake is the source of the Waccamaw River which is navigible by canoe/kayak. The river flows very slowly so you can paddle back to the lake with just a little more effort. Hence, you don't have to confine your interest to the lake.
