Carolina Beach State Park - Carolina Beach
Watch the rare Venus flytrap and other species of insect-eating plants in action! Over 30 defferent species of coastal trees, shrubs and other flora have been identified at the park. Explore this extraordinary habitat along the park's easy to negotiate, well planned trails.
The park marina makes for easy access to the Cape Fear River and adjoining waterways. Fishing (from the shore, pier or your boat) is great. Sports boating, too, is great here with the many available waterway options. Sorry, swimming is not allowed here (see Carolina Beach area Beaches for beach access points).
The marina complex, a fishing pier and one of the campsites in Area 2 are wheelchair friendly.
A picnic area is located near the bank of Snow's Cut (between the campground and the marina). 12 tables, each with a grill, nicely positioned under the park's large oak trees, make for a very relaxing stay. Water and restrooms with flush toilets are located nearby.
Carolina Beach State Park is home to the Venus
flytrap, the rare insect-eating plant. A park ranger would be happy to tell you about them
and even help you find them. They also follow a schedule of nature-awareness programs
throughout the year. Contact the park office
for more information.
Park Hours: Nov-Feb 8a-6p; Mar and Oct 8a-7p; Apr, May and Sep 8a-8p; Jne thru Aug 8a-9p.
Office hours: 8a-12p and 1p-5p Mon thru Fri. Gates are locked when the park is not in
operation (opened only for emergency situations) . The park is closed Christmas Day.

Campground
Trail (1 mi.) Blaze: blue round
Campground connects the family campground with Sugarloaf Trail from which most of the
attractions are accessed.
Flytrap
Trail (0.5 mi.) Blaze: orange diamond
Flytrap Trail is a loop giving you an especially close look at the native flora. Pocosins,
savanna and longleaf pines and turkey oaks are prominent here but the star of the show is
the rare, insect-eating Venus flytrap plant.
Snow's
Cut Trail (.5 mi.) Blaze: red diamond
Snow's Cut (named after the canal it skirts) joins the family campground and picnic area.
The rangaers urge you to look for fiddler crabs along this trail (they're fast so look
sharp).
Sugarloaf
Trail (3 mi.) Blaze: orange round
Starting at the marina parking lot at the west side of the park, Sugarloaf follows the
Cape Fear River shoreline to Sugarloaf Dune, then bends east visiting Cypress Pond, Lilly
Pond and Grass Pond. It bends back and returns you to the marina parking lot. This trail
takes you through the salt marsh which is teeming with wildlife. You can also detour from
Sugarloaf trail to the Campground, Flytrap and Swamp trails.
Swamp Trail
(0.75 mi.) Blaze: red round
Takes off from the Sugarloaf Trail near the marina parking lot at the east side of the
park, cuts across the park (provides access to the group camping area) and meets Sugarloaf
Trail at the west side. You can connect with Campground Trail here.

area BOAT RAMPS
There are over a third of a million boats registered
in Carolina. Most find their way to our fabulous waterways via boat ramps. Unfortunately
there is no single source revealing the locations of these ramps. We are working with the
Wildlife Commissions to build a list which will include directions to help you find these
ramps. This directory will be a-building for some time to come! We would certainly
appreciate any information our visitors can e-mail us - to: editor@Carolina-Now.com
